Screen capture and graphics tools for Windows systems

August 2007 note: This page is out of date and unlikely to be updated.

These are just a few of the many screen capture and graphics tools available. Those listed consistently get positive comments from members of the Techwr-L and HATT discussion groups.

Adobe Photoshop and other Adobe products
http://www.adobe.com/. Designed for professional graphic artists and other people who create many graphic materials and who need color separations and other advanced techniques. Many help projects do not need the power of these products. You may find that a less full-featured and less expensive tool, such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, will do everything you need.
FullShot
http://www.fullshot.com/. Captures Windows screens. Many features.
Hijaak and Hijaak Pro
http://www.imsisoft.com/ Screen capture, graphic file conversion and organization, image editing, batch processing. Many features.
Hypersnap DX
http://www.hyperionics.com/. Screen capture and image editing tool for Windows. Can auto-scroll and capture long web pages and other documents, enabling it to grab more than is visible on the screen. Integrates with the Windows clipboard, and has painting and editing features.
Paint Shop Pro
http://www.jasc.com/. The choice of many technical communicators. Captures screens and does most graphics creation and editing tasks. Imports and exports a wide range of graphic formats.
Palette Express
http://www.risoftsystems.com/store/palexp.asp. Creates a single, highly optimized palette (color table) based upon the various palettes used in multiple images. Dithers images to smaller palettes in order to reduce file sizes, without degrading image quality. Batch converts among .BMP, .GIF, and .JPEG formats.
SnagIt
http://www.techsmith.com/. Captures Windows screens, optionally including the mouse cursor; on-screen activity, including mouse movements, as a standard AVI video file; images or text from vertical scrolling windows; entire Web pages as a single image; DOS program screens that run under Windows. Supports numerous graphic formats; creates interlaced GIF and progressive JPEG.
