October 2016: This page has not been updated in years. It may have broken links or lead to outdated resources.
This page lists Australia-specific resources for technical editors. See also the main resources page.
- General editorial information
- A good starting place is the Society of Editors (Victoria) website http://www.socedvic.org/, which includes links to the Societies of Editors in other states and to a range of resource material.
The Society of Editors (NSW) http://www.editorsnsw.com/ is another good source. Members of the Society can join an e-mail list for announcements of freelance and staff editorial jobs (often in specialist fields such as science or technology).
- The Writer’s Bookcase http://www.writersbookcase.com is a Canberra-based mail order bookshop for writers and editors. Amongst a lot of information for fiction writers are some goodies for editors in a variety of fields.
- Technical writing and editing
- ASTC (NSW) — Australian Society for Technical Communication (NSW): http://www.astcnsw.org.au
ASTC (Victoria) — Australian Society for Technical Communication (Victoria): http://www.astcvic.org.au/
STC Australia Chapter — Society for Technical Communication: http://www.stc-aus.org.au/
Australian Technical Writers, a forum and announcement service for local technical writers. To subscribe, visit the website at http://www.freelists.org/list/austechwriter - Courses in technical writing and editing
- I don’t know of any tertiary-level courses in Australia specifically for technical editors. As far as I know, the only university-level course in technical communication are at the graduate level at Swinburne, Hawthorn (Melbourne): http://www.swinburne.edu.au/lss/techcommunications/techcommunications.html.
Universities and other educational institutions change their offerings from year to year, and I am no longer attempting to keep up with those changes. Please refer to this page: http://astcvic.org.au/courses/index.html.
