Courses for technical editors in Australia

I don't know of any tertiary-level courses in Australia specifically for technical editors, although there are several programs for general editors or journalists. I'll add information to this page as I find it.

Several people (including Jill Nicholson) teach short courses in technical writing and editing. Contact Jill jpnicho@bigpond.net.au for details about her courses, which she conducts at her home in the Sydney area.

In addition, the following university-level courses may be relevant, depending on your requirements and your area of interest.

Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn (Melbourne) has Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate programs in Technical Communication. You can find course information at http://www.swin.edu.au/postgrad or contact:

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Technology, Sydney has occasionally presented a Graduate Certificate in User Documentation (1 year part time), however it isn't listed on their website this year.

They do have a range of courses in professional writing, editing and publishing, and knowledge management, which may be of interest. For more information, visit http://www.uts.edu.au/div/publications/hss/pg/index.html

School of Communication and Media, University of Western Sydney (Nepean)
BA Communications in which you can major in Professional Communication (Technical Writing). You can do this course in tandem with another strand such as Public Relations or Journalism. Editor's note: this course can sometimes be found by searching the UWS site, and sometimes it cannot be found, probably because their course offerings keep changing. Also: Masters of Professional Communication has some technical writing components. http://www.uws.edu.au/
